To celebrate the end of the year in math students were challenged to unlock the code using their problem solving skills to communicate and collaborate with their peers. See if you can unlock the code!

There is no better way to end the year then to let the students teach you what they know. The students were able to review fractions and decimals by teaching their classmates the rules they remember. The students reviewed all operations related to fractions and decimals as well as how to convert between the two. It was a good opportunity for the students to become the leaders. Spending a day at Legacy Tennis Academy reminds you of the impact the skills you learn on the court have in your everyday lives, including in the classroom. The students were able to work on communication and collaboration skills. After some time thinking, and writing, about the connections on and off the court between school and sports the students worked on their tennis skills with some coaches. It was a beautiful day in the sun!
We had so much fun competing against our classmates in many different events. From picking up tennis balls with our feet and passing them to trying to fill a bucket with a leaky pipe! It was all hands on deck to keep up with the competition. Thank you to all the parent volunteers for making this day possible! After reading the beginning of Dog Tags, written by Alexander London, the students had the unique opportunity to meet the author. Alexander spoke with the students about the writing process and about how he gets his creative ideas. He also shared that he was not an avid reader as a student but embraces writing for adolescents to encourage all students to find something to enjoy. It was a very special meeting and discussion. Feel free to ask your students about what they took away from the experience. Also, feel free to enjoy some of his books and purchase some for your students.
The students took it to their classmates to learn some information about a typical Green Woods 6th Grader. The students came up with a statistical question and then asked their classmates to gather data. The students were then asked to display and analyze their findings. The students were very creative in their questioning and analyzing of the information. It was definitely a fun project to wrap up our data analysis unit.
As we spring into "Spring" we welcome some snow that didn't stand in our way. As we trudge onward we tackled Geometry this week and definitely got to see some fun shapes in nature as the snow came down. Over the break students are being asked to do some practice with all of our math concepts and figurative language. Feel free to find examples of figurative language in your everyday life with your students and examples of geometry in the real world. Enjoy your time off from school, but never do want to take time off of learning opportunities. See you in April!
We had so much fun in the woods learning about adaptations in nature and discussing the adaptations we noticed in Hatchet.
